Fuse boxes or fuse boards are extremely important devices that are usually hidden out of site in a cupboard. However they play an essential role in protecting you and your property against fire and electrocution. But how do you know when it is time to think about replacing your fuse box?
Here are some tips
1. The fuse box has no RCDs
The purposde of an RCD (residual current device) is to switch off the electricity supply if it detects any current leakaget. This prevents dangerous electric shocks and electrical fires. If your fuse box has RCDs fitted it will have a ‘Test’ or ‘T’ switch located on the fuse box.
2. The fuse board has a wooden backboard
Wooden backboards is a clear sign of a very old fuse box. These were first fitted in the 1950s and 60s, although some were still being fitted right up until the early 1980s. New installations must be fitted with metal backed casings because they are much better at containing fires.
3. You are changing the electrics in your home
If you are changing your kitchen/bathroom wiring or adding new circuits and sockets due to a new extension, loft conversion etc. then each new circuit is required by law to be fitted with a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) backed up with RCDs.
4. It has rewireable fuses or old style cartridge fuses
5. It has asbestos flash pads visisble behind the fuses
6. Your fuses keep blowing or circuit breakers keep tripping
If you want to get your fuse board reviewed to see if it is still fit for purpose, you should employ a recommended electrician to check it over.
